Yogya known for Mt Merapi - the Destructive Point of Interest

Besides the richness and authenticity in culture and traditions, Yogyakarta is known for its active volcano, Mount Merapi. It is the most active volcano in Indonesia and has erupted regularly since 1548. Many eruptions have occurred over the years and it has impacted the society and tourism both negatively and positively.

Mount Merapi alone has caused tourism to increase as people are curious about it and love to visit the place when its alert status is low. However when eruptions really occur, tourism is affected as tourists would not be able to visit Yogyakarta due to risk and danger.

The volcano continues to hold particular significance for the Javanese beliefs: it is one of four places where officials from the royal palace of Yogyakarta make annual offerings to placate the ancient Javanese spirits.
